Narrow Escape
The Singers were buried on the Sunday. The following Thursday, two days after the hurricane, this happened:
"...NARROW ESCAPE. - A little girl had a narrow escape of being drowned on Thursday last, at Stillingfleet. She fell into the water, and was overhead twice. Several women were near, but were so alarmed as not to be able to render the child any assistance. A little boy, however, went into the water, and with his hat succeeded in drawing the body to him, and this extricated the girl from her perilous situation."
From 'The York Chronicle', January 9th, 1834
There is no mention of the river, and given the recent hurricane and strange conditions on the water - and the accident, of course - it's unlikely a child would be allowed to venture down to the river. It's more possible the accident happened here, at the beck, on the village green. No doubt, villagers drew water from here for laundry, etc.
